Cleveland Central Weed & Seed

Operation Weed & Seed is a strategy created by the U. S. Department of Justice where residents, business owners, law enforcement, social service providers, and other community stakeholders pool their resources together to “weed out” drugs and crime and “seed” positive social and economic programs and activities.

With the support of former Ward 5 Councilman and current Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and former Mayor Jane Campbell, the Weed & Seed steering committee worked diligently to receive federal designation as an official Weed and Seed site. The steering committee consists of residents, City of Cleveland officials, representatives of Cleveland Police Department, and social service agencies.

As an Official Weed and Seed site, funding is available for various programs and improvements in the area. Receiving funding, however, is not the primary goal of the Weed & Seed strategy. Developing relationships between residents, law enforcement, business owners, and community stakeholders and connecting residents to existing programs that can improve both their lives and their neighborhoods is the true spirit of the strategy.

The target area for the Central Weed & Seed efforts is from East 55th Street to East 79th Street between Quincy and Cedar Avenues. This is a neighborhood that has been haunted by violent crime, drugs, and prostitution in the past, but is beginning to turn around due to new housing developments and resident efforts.
